Evolutionary history: Agamid lizards (Agamidae) form an ancient and remarkably diverse family of squamate reptiles. Their closest living relatives are the chameleons; together, the two families make up the evolutionary lineage known as Acrodonta, a name derived from their characteristic mode of tooth attachment. Their shared ancestry extends deep into the age of dinosaurs. Molecular studies place the divergence between agamids and chameleons in the Cretaceous, while fossils close to 100 million years old already preserve features associated with agamid evolution. Modern agamids are predominantly an Old World radiation, occurring from Africa and the Middle East across Asia to Australia in habitats ranging from deserts and savannas to tropical forests.

Appearance and lifestyle: Few lizard families demonstrate ecological diversity as clearly as Agamidae. They include robust desert herbivores, arboreal insect hunters, semi-aquatic dragons and highly ornamented species bearing crests, spines, throat displays and striking breeding colours. Visual communication through posture, head movements and colour is particularly important in many species. Among their most extraordinary adaptations is the gliding system of Draco, the flying dragons. Elongated ribs support expandable membranes that form an aerodynamic surface, allowing these lizards to glide between trees and even use their forelimbs to help control the wing during flight. At the opposite environmental extreme, Australia's thorny devil (Moloch horridus) possesses microscopic channels between its scales that collect water and transport it across the skin towards the mouth by capillary action.

Ecological role: Agamid diets range from predominantly insectivorous and omnivorous to strongly herbivorous. Many species consume large numbers of arthropods, while spiny-tailed lizards (Uromastyx) represent one of the family's best-known shifts towards plant-based feeding. Agamids therefore occupy several levels of terrestrial food webs, acting both as consumers and as prey for birds, snakes and mammals. More than six hundred living species are currently recognised within Agamidae, from bearded dragons and uromastyx to water dragons, flying dragons and numerous lesser-known lineages. Habitat degradation, climate change and unsustainable collection can threaten range-restricted species, making habitat protection and responsible, traceable captive husbandry increasingly important.

Agamids Archívum – TerraPlaza magazin

<meta name="description" content="Agamid lizards: evolution, species, behavior, conservation and care.
