Bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) thermoregulation is a fascinating process. When it wants to warm up, it flattens its body to absorb more heat from its surroundings. If it gets too warm, it may become lighter in color, start gaping, or move into the shade. These behaviors help it avoid overheating.

The right temperature is not only important for comfort. Digestion, activity and immune system function all depend on it. That is why a terrarium should include both a basking area and a cooler zone. The bearded dragon knows exactly when to move from one area to the other.
