The Halloween crab (Gecarcinus quadratus) is one of the most striking terrestrial crab species, with vivid black, orange and purple coloration.
It lives in coastal forests of Central America, where it hides in burrows dug into the soil. It is mainly active at night and usually remains sheltered during the day. Although it spends most of its life on land, access to water is especially important during reproduction. Females migrate toward the sea to release their eggs into the water.
