Monitors
Evolutionary history: Monitor lizards (Varanidae) belong to the anguimorph branch of the squamate reptiles, with evolutionary roots extending at least into the Late Cretaceous. Early varanid relatives are particularly well represented in the fossil record of Eurasia, although the precise geographical origin of modern Varanus remains debated. All living monitor lizards belong to this single genus, occurring naturally across Africa, southern and southeastern Asia, Australia and numerous Indo-Pacific islands. Their modern distribution tells only part of the story: monitor lizards once inhabited Europe as well, with Varanus fossils documenting their presence there from the Miocene into the Pleistocene.
Appearance and lifestyle: Monitor lizards share a characteristic combination of a long neck, powerful limbs and tail, and a deeply forked tongue used to collect chemical information from their surroundings. Their size ranges from tiny dwarf monitors only a few tens of centimetres long to the Komodo dragon, which can exceed three metres. Varanids are also unusually capable aerobic performers among ectothermic reptiles. In many lizards, lateral bending of the trunk during locomotion interferes mechanically with rib-based breathing; monitor lizards can supplement ventilation with a positive-pressure gular pump, helping them breathe effectively while moving. Research on the savannah monitor has revealed another surprise: parts of its lungs exhibit unidirectional airflow, a respiratory pattern once associated primarily with birds and crocodilians. Even the famous Komodo dragon has been subject to scientific myth-busting. The old idea that it kills prey using uniquely septic oral bacteria is poorly supported; severe tissue damage and blood loss are central to its attack, while biologically active secretions from mandibular glands contain compounds capable of affecting coagulation and cardiovascular function.
Ecological role: Most monitor lizards are active predators or opportunistic feeders, taking prey ranging from insects and crustaceans to fish, reptiles, birds and mammals, while many species also consume carrion. As both predators and scavengers, they can strongly influence terrestrial and aquatic food webs. Yet not every monitor is predominantly carnivorous. Several Philippine species consume large quantities of fruit, and some can act as important seed dispersersin tropical forests – a striking ecological role for a lineage better known for predation. More than ninety living species of monitor lizard are currently recognised, encompassing terrestrial, arboreal, burrowing and highly aquatic specialists. Habitat loss, hunting and wildlife trade place pressure on numerous species, making habitat protection and legal, traceable captive husbandry essential to their long-term conservation.
