The giant leaf insect (Phyllium giganteum) is one of the largest leaf insect species kept as a terrarium hobby animal. Its broad, flattened body resembles a real leaf, and it can reach around 10 cm in length. Its body is mostly green, often with brown spots or discoloration along the edges. These patterns can vary between individuals, so no two specimens look exactly alike. On the upper side of the abdomen, two brown spots can also be observed, and its legs have leaf-like extensions. These details further enhance its camouflage, allowing the insect to blend almost perfectly into the vegetation.
This special appearance is not only impressive, but also an effective form of defense: leaf mimicry can help it hide from predators.
