The tiger salamander underground burrow is an important refuge for the tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum). This amphibian spends much of the year in burrows dug into the soil, where the environment is cooler and calmer.
When the weather is hot, it prefers to retreat underground, where the temperature is more comfortable. This is especially important because amphibians are sensitive to drying out and excessive heat.
Hiding underground also offers protection from more than just the sun. These burrows help shield the tiger salamander from lurking predators, allowing it to rest in safety.
