The red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) female can lay eggs several times a year. She usually lays 5–15 eggsat a time. The eggs are buried in shallow holes and hidden in the soil. There, the young tortoises continue to develop, depending entirely on the surrounding conditions. Hatching usually takes 4–6 months, but the exact timing depends on temperature and humidity. In warmer and more humid conditions, development may happen at a different pace.
