The savanna monitor (Varanus exanthematicus) is a characteristic reptile of the African savanna belt. It mainly occurs in grassy woodland, more open habitats and lightly wooded areas.
It usually moves at ground level, where it searches for food, looks for resting places or retreats into burrows. Young individuals, however, may climb branches, low trees or rocky surfaces more often. This behavior can help with orientation, escape and safer resting.
