Panther chameleon feet: Masters of grip

The panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) has specially adapted feet that help it move safely among branches. Its toes form side-facing groups, allowing the animal to grip branches almost like a pair of tongs. This adaptation is essential, as the panther chameleon spends much of its life in trees and shrubs. A strong grip supports its slow, precise movement through vegetation. Its claws are relatively blunt compared with those of some other chameleon species. This can help with controlled movement and makes handling more comfortable for keepers as well. The strong, cylindrical tail adds even more stability. It works almost like a fifth limb, helping the chameleon balance and move from one branch to another.
