Angelfish social behavior can play an important role in survival. The angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is naturally found in the slow-moving, densely vegetated waters of the Amazon Basin. It often lives in side branches, oxbow lakes and calmer water areas, including regions connected to the Rio Negro.
In the wild, this species is not strictly solitary. Angelfish may move in smaller groups of around 10–15 individuals. They can also be found near other peaceful cichlid species. Fish living in groups may detect danger more easily. They can also navigate their environment better and move more safely among aquatic plants.
