Sea scorpions are distant “relatives” of modern scorpions on the evolutionary tree. They appeared more than 400 million years ago, which means they lived on Earth long before the dinosaurs. Based on ancient fossils, some species may have reached up to 1 meter in length. One of the largest known examples, Terropterus xiushanensis, could grow up to 2 meters long. These ancient arthropods were among the largest representatives of sea scorpions. They show just how fascinating and unusual the creatures of Earth’s distant past could be.
