The number of known snake species now exceeds 4,200! Snakes (Serpentes) are an incredibly diverse group of reptiles found across almost the entire world.

Southeast Asia, South America and tropical regions of Africa are particularly rich in snake diversity. However, snakes also occur in temperate regions and dry habitats.

Snakes play an important role in ecosystems worldwide. Many species help regulate rodent populations, while also serving as important members of food webs. Their remarkable diversity is reflected not only in their habitats, but also in their colors, body structures and behavior.
