With the help of its labyrinth organ, the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) can breathe air from the water surface. The labyrinth organ is a large, maze-like structure. Inside it, blood in tiny capillaries comes into direct contact with air. This is where gas exchange happens, allowing the fish to absorb oxygen. This special adaptation helps the Siamese fighting fish survive in low-oxygen waters. These include slow-moving and warm environments.
