The leopard gecko eyelid differs from that of many other gecko species. The leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) belongs to the eyelid geckos, or Eublepharinae. One of its special features is that it has movable eyelids. When it blinks, the lower eyelid mainly moves upward, which is a rare feature among reptiles. This trait is not only interesting, but also useful. It helps protect and clean the eye while the leopard gecko stays alert to its surroundings.
